These colorful bobbled hats are crocheted with our self-striping Berroco Sox. Offered in two sizes, these cheerful earflap hats will chase away your winter doldrums.

Crochet hook, size 3.75 (F-5) OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Work 5 dc’s in next st; drop loop from hook; insert hook in top of first dc from front to back; return loop to hook; pull loop through dc, ch 1 (this ch-1 is the top of the popcorn)

CHILD’S HAT

With crochet hook, using Huddersfield, ch 2.

Rnd 1: Work 10 hdc’s in 2nd ch from hook, join with a sl st in top of first hdc – 10 sts. DO NOT turn. Work from here in the round.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, * 2 hdc in next st, rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of first hdc – 20 sts.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, * 2 hdc in next st, popcorn in next st, rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of first hdc – 30 sts.

Rnd 4: * Hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st, rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of first hdc – 40 sts.

Rnd 5: Ch 1, * 2 hdc’s in next st, hdc in each of the next 2 sts, popcorn in next st, rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of first hdc – 50 sts.

Rnd 6: Ch 1, * hdc in each of the next 4 sts, 2 hdc’s in next st, rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of first hdc – 60 sts.

Rnd 7: Ch 1, * 2 hdc’s in next st, hdc in each of the next 4 sts, popcorn in next st, rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of first hdc – 70 sts.

Rnd 8: Ch 1, * hdc in each of the next 6 sts, 2 hdc’s in next st, rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of first hdc – 80 sts.

Work 6 more rnds in this manner – on odd numbered rnds, work 1 less hdc at beg of rnd and 1 more hdc at end of rnd. On even numbered rnds, rep Rnd 10. Do not break off yarn.

First Earflap: Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, hdc in each of the next 18 sts. Turn. Working back and forth, rep this row 5 times more, end on WS.

Row 7 (RS): Ch 1, hdc in first st, dec over next 2 sts, hdc in each st to last 3 sts, dec over next 2 sts, hdc in last st – 16 sts. Turn. Rep this row 6 times more – 4 sts. Turn.

Row 14: (Dec over next 2 sts) twice – 2 sts. Turn.

Row 15: Dec over next 2 sts – 1 st. Fasten off.

Second Earflap: With RS facing, skip 18 sts on last rnd of hat. Using crochet hook, join yarn in next st and work same as first earflap. DO NOT fasten off.

Ties and Edging: Ch 40. Work popcorn in 3rd ch from hook, then sl st in each ch back to end of earflap; work in sc along side edge of earflap, along last rnd of hat to beg of first earflap, then along side edge of earflap to fastened-off st; ch 40, work popcorn in 3rd ch from hook, then sl st in each ch back to end of earflap; work in sc along side edge of earflap, then along last rnd of hat to beg of second earflap; work in sc along side edge of earflap to tie. Join with a sl st in tie. Fasten off.

WOMEN’S HAT

With crochet hook, using Bonhom, work same as child’s hat until Rnd 9 has been completed – 90 sts.

Rnd 10: Ch 1, * hdc in each of the next 8 sts, 2 hdc’s in next st, rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of first hdc – 100 sts.

Rnd 11: Ch 1, * 2 hdc’s in next st, hdc in each of the next 8 sts, popcorn in next st, rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of first hdc – 110 sts.

Rnd 12: Ch 1, hdc in each st around, join with a sl st in top of first hdc.

Rnd 13: Ch 1, * hdc in each of the next 10 sts, popcorn in next st, rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of first hdc.

Rnd 14: Rep Rnd 12.

Rnds 15 – 30: Rep Rnds 13 and 14, moving popcorn over on every odd numbered rnd as on child’s hat. DO NOT fasten off.

First Earflap: Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, hdc in each of the next 22 sts, turn. Working back and forth, rep this row 5 times more, end on WS.

Row 7 (RS): Ch 1, hdc in first st, dec over next 2 sts, hdc in each st to last 3 sts, dec over next 2 sts, hdc in last st – 20 sts. Turn. Rep this row 8 times more – 4 sts. Complete same as first earflap on child’s hat. Fasten off.

Second Earflap: With RS facing, skip 22 sts on last rnd of hat. Using crochet hook, join yarn in next st and complete same as first earflap. DO NOT fasten off. Work Ties and Edging same as child’s hat.
