Crocheted Shawl

Size: Approx. 20" x 64".

Materials:
Sport-weight yarn Fore Õn Aft (100% Acrilan acrylic, 175 yards per 1-3/4oz. skein) by Brunswick: 12 skeins #60410 Oats Heather. Crochet hook size D/3 (3.25mm) or whatever size needed to get correct gauge.

Gauge: 34 sts and 12 rows = 6" in Shells and Squares Stitch.To save time, take time to check your gauge.
*Yarn requirements suggested in this pattern are adequate. If you make any adjustments in length or width, or if your stitch gauge differs from the recommendation, then the yarn amount may not be sufficient.

Special Abbreviations

dtr—double triple crochet: Yarn over hook 3 times, insert hook into st and pull up a loop, [yarn over and pull through 2 loops] 4 times.
[ ]—do step in brackets as many times as indicated.

Special Stitches

Shell
Into specified space, work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc).
Shells and Squares Stitch (multiple of 16 sts + 5)
Foundation Row: (RS) 2 dc into 4th ch from hook, ch 2, 2 dc into next ch, *[ch 2, sk 2 ch, 1 dc into next ch] 4 times, ch 2, sk 2 ch, 2 dc into next ch, ch 2, 2 dc into next ch; rep from * to end, turn.
Row 1: (WS) Ch 3, work shell into next ch-2 sp (shell-in-shell made), *ch 4, [1 dtr into next dc, sk 2 ch] 4 times, ch 4, make shell in next ch-2 sp; rep from * to end, 1 dc into top of turning ch, turn.
Row 2: Ch 3, shell-in-shell, *ch 4, 1 sc into each of next 4 dtr, ch 4, shell-in-shell; rep from * to end, 1 dc into top of turning ch, turn.
Row 3 - 4: Ch 3, shell-in-shell, *ch 4, 1 sc into each of next 4 sc, ch 4, shell-in-shell; rep from * to end, 1 dc into top of turning ch, turn.
Row 5: Ch 3, shell-in-shell, *[1 dtr into next sc, ch 2] 3 times, 1 dtr into next sc, shell-in-shell; rep from * to end, 1 dc into top of turning ch, turn.

(WS) Ch 3, shell-in-shell, *ch 1, sk next 2 ch, 1 sc into next dc, 2 sc into next ch-2 sp, 1 sc into next dc, 1 sc into next ch-2 sp, 1 sc into next dc, 2 sc into next ch-2 sp, 1 sc into next dc (9 sc made), ch 1, shell-in-shell; rep from * to end, 1 sc into top of turning ch, turn.
Row 2: Ch 2, shell-in-shell, *ch 2, sk next sc, 1 sc into each of next 7sc, sk next sc, ch 2, shell-in-shell; rep from * to end, ch 2, 1 sc into next sc, turn.

Shawl
Loosely ch 357. Work in Shells and Squares Stitch Pattern for 37 rows ending with a pattern Row 6 (RS). *Work 6 rows of Shell Border. At end of last border row with RS facing, work along side edge as follows: work [1 shell into edge of next row, then 1 sc into edge of next row] across to corner, fasten off yarn. With WS facing, attach yarn to next corner (beg of foundation row) and rep from *, sl st to first st of Shell Border, fasten off.

Finishing
Weave in any loose ends. Wet shawl and dry on fluff cycle until slightly damp.
Lay out flat to block.
